Herons have a nicitating membrane (third eyelid) that protects the eye when fishing

 

This 10-week-old heron chick deflected an attack by a bald eagle.  Amazing.  Watch closely on the right-hand side of the shot.  This happened at about 4:30 a.m.  On two other occasions the eagle knocked the heron right out of the nest with its talons.  One survived and one didn’t.  Stay tuned.

 

This beaver walked all the way from the low intertidal to have a freshwater shower!!
